FAQs
View FAQ PageWhat is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
In Canada, a Registered Dietitian (RD) is a regulated health professional who provides evidence based nutrition care. Dietitians are licensed and overseen by a provincial regulatory college, similar to pharmacists, nurses, and physicians, which ensures safe, ethical, and accountable practice. To earn the RD credential, dietitians must complete an accredited university degree, more than 1,250 hours of supervised practicum training, and pass the national Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination (CDRE). Unlike the title “nutritionist,” which is only protected in some provinces, “dietitian” is a legally protected title across Canada.
What is a certified diabetes educator (CDE) ?
A Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is a regulated health professional such as a nurse, pharmacist, or dietitian who has advanced training and experience in diabetes care and education. In Canada, becoming a CDE requires completing at least supporting people with diabetes and passing the national CDE exam. To maintain the credential, CDEs must complete professional development and re-certify by writing the exam every five years, ensuring their knowledge and practice stay current.
Are RD services covered?
Many extended health benefit plans cover dietitian services. Check with your provider to see if you’re eligible. In addition, fees paid to a Registered Dietitian qualify as a with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), which means you may also be able to claim them on your taxes.
